abandoned service station in the middle of nowhere. The Frunk.

Have put aboot 400 miles on the car, about 340 today. Made it from Albuquerque to Colorado city. Had a vaporlock-related waiting period in Las Vegas, NM. Made many friends. Was there for an hour and the local corvair expert was going to be called down. Went for a walk, saw this badass chrysler

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

A black, fuselage new yorker is most definitely BAD ASS. Came back, got a coffee and the car was ready to go. Made it to 9 miles out of Raton, NM then I got a rock under the crank pulley and shredded my fanbelt. Being not stupid, i had a spare. It was wrong, so wrong.

Kinja'd!!!

Attempted fanbelt #1 drawstring from my laundry bag. Lasted 10 seconds.

Kinja'd!!!

attempted fanbelt #2 2 shoelaces from my redwing boots twisted together and wrapped in tape. lasted 30 seconds.

Kinja'd!!!

#3 which made it about 4 or 5 miles. cobbled together from shredded remnants of #2. It actually survived but jumped off the alternator.

Kinja'd!!!

and finally, the solution, a real fanbelt, of which i bought 2. note the wierd routing.

The car runs like a champ, thought I’d be putting along at 55 but the car likes 65-70. With the cobwebs blown out and the rat shit cooked off the engine it’s gained about 15-20% more power. It’s not fast, but it got slightly faster. Have listened to no music but the flat 6 music.

I can hear people outside my hotel room “it’s a corvair monza!” I am a happy, sunburned, greasy man.

FYI Corvair fan belts are a natural rev limiter.

getting the car-guy adventure I wanted, and putting my mechanical inclination to the ultimate test. Many miles to go.

I also brought an electric fuel pump, hoping not to need it, but have messed around with old cars before.

I’m jealous. I had a monza two summers ago that was my first car I ever purchased myself. I drove it all summer and sold it to a better home for 4K after paying 2200 though. I really miss it though, if it wouldn’t have had to be a daily I would’ve loved to keep it.
